@ilpappa unfortunately I'm not the one to give advice about electronics - I don't have enough knowledge/experience.

@viziong Might be a redundant tip, but double check if all of your paths from gamelist.xml are actually correct. I once had a scraper put all my videos in ./images/ instead of ./videos, so my ES was just looking in the wrong folder.

@mitu thanks for the reply, I did check various threads but what is confusing me here is that in hindsight they did work, but have suddenly stopped. They did work but whilst messing with stuff to see if there was any impact I upped the vram and also enabled the oxm player, but these are now back to their default and it is now the videos only play sound.

@sleve_mcdichael said in Video slideshow has blank screen between some videos:

They're read from the gamelist, right? Or no?

    Yes.

After this PR will be merged, it will be possible to use a separate folder for videos, just like for images, in the screensaver.

Great responses here, thank you so much. Of course it does come down to personal preference but your responses are helping me determine which way I want to go, so please don't think there's no value in the discussion. :-)

I'm currently trying re-encoding some videos with Handbrake to see how that goes and if it's worth pursuing. I think I'm probably trying to have my cake and eat it (which to some degree you can do with Retropie lol), but I still have a bit of thinking to do about which way I'm gonna go ultimately.

Guys and gals here - you rock, as always. Thanks again. ;-)

@colombia20102018 said in Video paths not showing on Emulationstation:

I would think there is a way to paste all the video paths to all games at once. Am I wrong? Thanks

No idea what happened on your mame-libretro folder, looks like the gamelist is correct, so I don't understand why it's now showing the artwork in EmulationStation. You can check if the paths referenced in the gamelist.xml file are correct (i.e. the video/image files are present on-disk), maybe they are missing (but you said they're present, so probably not).

    @mitu good day!
I was testing some mame video snaps on retropie.
Im well aware of the new default being VLC and that retropie is moving away from omxplayer.

On my system, video snaps from same source, some play ok some other not. They produce the blackscreen as per this post.

In VLC settings ffmpeg HW acceleration is disabled in codecs section. I cant find yet what is VLC missing and cant paly these files.

This is on a pi4 2GB model with latest updates and retropie.

For testing im providing this small 900KB argus.mp4 video snap
    https://mega.nz/folder/2HAxmYJR#nNsMz6pZDkn1T36ASe5ZCg

I have on my system also installed the MPV. This one works great on all problematic video snaps.
VLC requires re-encoding of the files to work ok

Here is my testing from command line

And running the re-encoded (as per above) video snap, which now vlc can play OK!

@Clyde & @zwooky my .bat-fu times are long past and I've never touched the powershell, but if it is just for the conversion on a desktop pc, and a *nix VM ain't at hand: why not use a live system from usb with a partition for some persistence storage (to keep installs/settings/changes to the system)? I on my behalve, if not using an external HDD with an Ubuntu Install on it (Bootloader placed on that HDD), am using The Universal USB Installer to setup a stick for such tasks...

I was not able to figure this out. For my purposes, I wanted to restrict access to the other lists anyway as this machine is for a workplace arcade setup so I wanted a very straightforward setup, so I updated the ES config to not allow the B button to work. It loads All Games by default, and I turned off the ability to go from system to system, so for now it's working for me. Thanks for the input that was received.

Please add some info about your system, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

What format are your videos and how did you get them (scraper/download/other) ? EmulationStation doesn't automatically detect videos/images if copy them next to your ROMs, the videos need to be associated to the ROMs/games in the system's gamelist file. Usually a scraper does that automatically, but if you copied them manually and expect to show up in EmulationStation, that won't work.

Disregard. I figured out the issue. I originally downloaded a Romset and it had a Gamelist included. So I guess if a gamelist is already in the rom folder, it ignores the one in config.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

I have finally resolved it myself: the Bash Script itself was named "Master Edition" by accident, which led to this particular gamelist entry being ignored, with the bash script name being shown as the title instead, and since it has been ignored - no video.
Can be closed, but I will not delete this for now, in case anyone else encounters this or some of the friendly users who answered want to know where this went.

@mitu said in Adding codec to Retropie for snap videos that do not play:

EmulationStation by default uses libvlc, when you switch to omxplayer, then it will use omxplayer.

.. video still do not play.

Yes, because, as I explained before, vlc now uses the same path to decode videos as omxplayer.

Ah, apparently these are patches for vlc and the libvlc..

These are already included in Raspbian (and therefore RetroPie) and used internally by libvlc. Those patches are the reason that vlc behaves similarly to omxplayer.

I feel like my last statement from my previous reply was misleading - I was referring to the fact that if we force vlc to use SW decoding, then we'll lose the HW decoding advantage from the RPI patches added to vlc. Right now, we don't configure libvlc in EmulationStation, so the only option currently for those troublesome videos is conversion.

Out of curiosity, what is the development path forward for 64-bit RPiOS? Omxplayer is officially deprecated in favor of VLC by RPiT so it looks like its VLC or die...
